Calculating Milestones
Service calculations at Illinois State University are done in a manner that includes all time spent serving ISU as Faculty (and Faculty Associate) or Staff. Student, Graduate Assistant, and part-time Extra Help time is not included in these calculations.
Full-year appointments
- All time spent in appointments of 12 months are included in service years.
- Breaks in service (employees who leave and return to service at Illinois State University) will have those break periods deducted. These are only those who leave Illinois State University, not those who experience seasonal or academic break layoffs.
- Time spent in classifications of Administrative Professional, Civil Service, and 12-month Faculty appointments are included in this group.
Partial-year appointments
- Contracts 2 months to 7 months will be given credit for ½ year of service to Illinois State University.
- Contracts greater than 7 months will be given credit for 1 year of service to Illinois State University.
- Breaks in service (employees who leave and return to service at Illinois State University) will have those break periods deducted. These are only those who leave Illinois State University, not those who experience seasonal or academic break layoffs or are not regularly employed during the summer session.
SURS, Benefit Accrual, and Parking years of service
- SURS (State University Retirement System) years of service are calculated by that agency and can include other time not spent at Illinois State University (e.g., purchased service credit or other state employment time)
- Benefit Accrual years of service for Civil Service employees are calculated based on policy and update at the beginning of the fiscal year. Due to the difference in timing of calculations, someone may have different years of service at the time of this calculation than at the time of milestone calculation.
- Parking years of service are calculated based on Office of Parking and Transportation procedure and update at the beginning of the academic year. Due to the difference in timing of calculations, someone may have different years of service at the time of this calculation than at the time of milestone calculation.
