Vacation and Sick Time

Paid vacation and sick time may be available to faculty and staff at Illinois State University. For more information on vacation and sick time, please review the appropriate policy below. Any questions may be directed to Human Resources.

For employees eligible to receive vacation and sick time, maximum balances allowed are based on the following information. The information in each drop down is based on 37.5 standard weekly hours and 1.00 FTE - Full Time Equivalency. Click here for a PDF version of the full chart.

  • 0-3 yrs = 3.750 hrs (max 180)
  • 4-6 yrs = 4.688 hrs (max 225.024)
  • 7-9 yrs = 5.625 hrs (max 270)
  • 10-14 yrs = 6.563 hrs (max 315.024)
  • 15+ yrs = 7.813 hrs (max 375.024)
  • Hours based on 37.5 hours/week classifications and years of service are by fiscal year
  • Accrual is by time period and prorated on FTE*

40 hours/week classification

Sick Vacation

Max 4.0 hours per period

Max 8.0 hours per month

  • 0-3 yrs = 4.000 hrs (max 192.00)
  • 4-6 yrs = 5.000 hrs (max 240.00)
  • 7-9 yrs = 6.000 hrs (max 288.00)
  • 10-14 yrs = 7.000 hrs (max 336.00)
  • 15+ yrs = 8.333 hrs (max 399.984)
  • Hours based on 40 hours/week classifications and years of service are by fiscal year
  • Accrual is by time period and prorated on FTE*

  • Civil Service Exempt
Sick Vacation
Max 7.5 hours per month
  • 0-3yrs = 15.625 hrs (max 375)
  • 4-6yrs = 16.250 hrs (max 390)
  • 7-9yrs = 16.875 hrs (max 405)
  • 10+yrs = 17.500 hrs (max 420)
  • Hours based on years of service (all 37.5 hour per-week)
  • Accrual happens monthly and prorated on FTE

  • 15 hrs per month (prorated on FTE)

  • Max 7.5 hours per month
  • Zeroed at end of contract
  • 15 hrs per month (prorated on FTE)

  • Faculty - Tenured and Tenure-Track

  • Max = 420 hrs

Applies only if faculty member is in a position that receives vacation time.  Designation of whether the time is continuous or non-continuous will be stated in the offer letter per policy 3.2.5 Vacation.

Applies only if faculty member is 12 month position (i.e. Milner, Chair, Director, Acting and Interim)

NOTE: NTT’s with full-time 100% service over more than 6 consecutive semesters do not have sick time zeroed – per contract Hours based on 37.5 hour-per-week Accrual happens monthly and prorated on FTE

  • Faculty Associates Continuous and Non-Continuous

NOTE: Non-continuous sick zeroed at end of contract

  • Other Classifications/Employee Classes do not receive vacation or sick leave.
