Other Time Away From Work

Additional paid or unpaid time off may be available to faculty and staff at Illinois State University. For more information, please review the appropriate policy below. Any questions may be directed to Human Resources.

Release Time

Release time is time away from work with pay. Release time may be approved for:

  • Conducting personal business in offices such as Human Resources, Student Access and Accommodation Services, Office of Equal Opportunity and Access, etc.
  • Participating in Wellness activities, attending University events, attending University-sponsored development programs, etc.

No pay is provided to employees who participate in such activities outside of their normal work schedule. In all cases, release time is granted by the supervisor based on operating needs of the unit. Release time is referenced in University Policy 3.6.1 and 3.4.15 Non-Exempt Hourly Work Time.

Military Leave

The Military Leave of Absence Act grants any eligible employee of the State of Illinois (other than an independent contractor) who is a member of any reserve component of the United States Armed Forces or of any reserve component of the Illinois State Militia leave from State employment for any period actively spent in such military service, including:

  • Basic training
  • Special or advanced training, whether or not within the State, and whether or not voluntary
  • Annual training

VESSA

The Victims’ Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA) grants up to 12 weeks of leave for employees who are victims of domestic, gender or sexual violence or who have a family or household member who is a victim of domestic, gender or sexual violence.
